Overview of the Project
EcoPPPs develops new strategies for the correct use of plant protection products through innovative technologies, with two aims held together: minimising pollution from point and diffuse sources, and maximising the safety of the people who apply these products and of the consumers who eat the food.
The wide and often careless use of chemical plant protection products has consequences for people and for the environment, and poses risks to public health. Much of that risk arises not in the field itself but around it, in how equipment is prepared, filled and cleaned.
Objectives
- Study every stage of the procurement, use and handling of plant protection products.
- Develop algorithms for the correct calibration of spraying equipment and for the decisions that surround its use.
- Create an optimisation methodology that balances quality, performance, time, cost and user safety.
- Assess the economic viability of the proposed techniques and the conditions under which farmers adopt them.
Implementation
Cleaning station
A portable cleaning station for tractor-mounted sprayers, designed for use in environmentally sensitive areas where run-off matters most.
Training
Training activities in agricultural regions on pollution pathways and on the safety of the people handling plant protection products.
Economic assessment
Evaluation of the economic viability of the proposed techniques and of how readily they are accepted in practice.
Our role
The Agricultural Economics and Consumer Behaviour Lab took part in EcoPPPs through the Institute of Bio-economy and Agri-technology (iBO) of CERTH, contributing to the economic evaluation of the proposed techniques and to the assessment of how readily farmers adopt them.
